Our proposed work in Uganda
Protecting children and families
Families, especially children, pay a high price when a family member is imprisoned.
These children are collateral casualties of incarceration, often left vulnerable to a wide range of risks such as; abuse and neglect, poverty and homelessness, and dropping out of school. Often, these children become entangled in the criminal justice system themselves.
Equipping and empowering families, right where they are
In the summer of 2019, our new partnership with Wells of Hope will provide family-based care services to children whose parents are currently incarcerated in Kampala’s Maximum Security Prison. This pilot intervention will partner with churches in the Ugandan community to recruit families to provide temporary or longer-term care for children.
Family Preservation and Empowerment
Our first priority for children of incarcerated parents is to locate extended family. If reunification is appropriate, we support these families to reintegrate the child back into their family of origin.
Foster Care
When family can’t be located, or it is not safe for a child to return, we partner with local churches and communities to place children into loving homes where they can thrive. When possible, we work to maintain the child’s connection to their incarcerated parent while in foster care.
Help support Bethany’s proposed work in Uganda
For families facing separation – due to the incarceration of a parent – meeting basic needs can seem impossible. With your gift, we can change that—because every child has the right to a nurturing, protective family.
