Our work in Ethiopia
Bethany awarded $1 million USAID grant
Protecting children and families
Poverty and internal conflict are a big reason why 200,000 children are living outside of family-based care in major Ethiopian cities. When children are separated from their families, an orphanage has historically been the solution for their care.

Family is essential
Decades of research emphasize that family is essential to a child’s physical, psychological, emotional, and spiritual well-being. Our first priority in Ethiopia is keeping children stable and safe with their family of origin. When that’s not possible, we find local adoptive families who can provide a loving home.
Your gift helps keep families together.
Equipping and empowering families, right where they are
Our goal is to equip local families to provide loving homes, so children can thrive.
Family Preservation and Empowerment
Access to life’s essentials makes a big difference for struggling families. We help families gain access to nutritious food, health care, and assistance with school fees. We equip families with vocational skills and training to become stronger and self-sufficient within 3-5 years.
Foster-to-Adopt
When a child isn’t able to remain with their family, we help open the door to a safe, stable home. We partner with local churches, communities, and governments to identify, train, supervise, and support foster-to-adopt families to be the answer for children in need.
Refugee Services
We provide South Sudanese refugees, in the Gambella refugee camps, with psychosocial and mental health support services. We also provide family-based care for unaccompanied or separated children.
Help support Bethany’s work in Ethiopia
Ethiopia needs a child protection system that provides loving homes for children, not orphanages. With your gift, we can train more foster parents—because children need families.
