Haiti
Haiti is located 50 miles east of Cuba and has a population of nearly nine million. It shares the Caribbean island of Hispaniola with the Dominican Republic, covering one-third of the island. Haiti is about the size of Massachusetts in square miles. Ninety-five percent (95%) of the people of Haiti are of African descent and 5% are of mixed descent (mostly Arab and European). Haiti’s official languages are French and Creole—which is spoken more often than French.
Bethany Christian Services (BCS) was first approached about doing adoptions in Haiti in 2005 as there was a great need in the country. Haiti is the poorest nation in the Western Hemisphere, resulting in many vulnerable children in need of care. BCS signed a contract with God’s Littlest Angels, an orphanage in Pétion-Ville, and in the summer of 2007, we placed our first children into adoptive homes. Since then, many more children have come home to the United States.
We are also actively seeking partnerships to work with the prevention of abandonment, as well as serving children and families in their own communities.
God’s Littlest Angels is committed to the families and children of Haiti. Some of their other services include:
- Temporary care of premature babies until they are strong enough to return to their families
- International sponsorship so children may attend school
- Relief for a hurricane-affected community
BCS is currently working on establishing a partnership with another orphanage in Haiti. At this time, BCS’s involvement in Haiti has primarily been with intercountry adoptions. Options for further involvement with social services are currently being explored.
