Albania
Located in southeastern Europe near Greece and Italy, the Republic of Albania emerged from communism in 1990 as one of the poorest countries in Europe. Albania has since made great strides to stabilize its government and economy, addressing security and poverty issues, among others. Yet many children and families still need assistance.
Bethany became involved in Albania in 1991 by sending humanitarian aid and emergency medical supplies for children. That led to the establishment of Bethany Social Services Albania (BSSA) that same year, and today BSSA is an independent, legally registered social services agency, recognized as a national leader within the Albanian social services sector.
In partnership with the Albanian government and with generous assistance from donors in West Michigan, BSSA constructed two transitional group homes, which have served as models in Albania for transitioning children from orphanages to families. Further development of foster care and other temporary care services continues with a goal of deinstitutionalizing children.
BSSA also provides an array of Family Support services:
- Family preservation and family reunification services
- Comprehensive care for pregnant women
- Crisis intervention services
These are offered in a variety of settings, including homes, clinics, hospitals, and schools.
In the 1990s, BSSA helped found Albania’s first School of Social Work at the University of Tirana. Through this and other training programs, BSSA has trained thousands of workers from universities, government offices, orphanages, non-governmental organizations, hospitals, and schools on social service and child development topics.
BSSA has also worked with government officials to establish best practices laws and models for child welfare. By building the capacity of the Albanian social services system, BSSA helps to ensure that vital services are provided to more vulnerable children in Albania.
