Colombia
Colombia is the northernmost country in South America and is the only South American country that has coasts on both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Colombia is a country rich in history dating back to 1499. Bethany has had a long history with Colombia as well. Colombia was one of Bethany Christian Services’ first intercountry adoption programs, which began in 1982.
Instituto Colombiano de Bienestar Familiar (ICBF) is the social welfare system for Colombia. ICBF provides a continuum of services for families and children that include: family preservation, early intervention, life skills, parenting, foster care, orphanages, domestic (in-country) adoption, and intercountry adoption.
Currently, Bethany Christian Services (BCS) is supporting a project with the non-governmental organization Amici de Bambini to help children in the Choco region with education, socialization, and basic needs. BCS has also raised funds to help build a school at Chiquitines.
Colombia is a Hague-accredited country. ICBF licenses agencies for intercountry adoptions, and Bethany is one of only 16 U.S. agencies licensed for intercountry adoption. Since 1982, Bethany has facilitated more than 150 adoptions, including children with special physical, medical, and emotional needs.
