Bulgaria

Overview

Welcome to the Bulgaria adoption program! As you begin to plan for your growing family, we share the joyful anticipation of welcoming a child into your home by adoption. With our wealth of experience in intercountry adoption, we consider it an honor to work with you by providing excellent resources and guidance throughout your journey.

The Bulgaria program re-opened in early 2009. Between 1994 and 2005, 62 children joined their adoptive families through Bethany’s Bulgaria program. Bethany works closely with a Bulgarian, Hague-accredited, non-governmental organization (NGO). Children available for adoption from Bulgaria range in age from one to 15 years. There are generally more boys available for adoption than girls. Preference in referral processing by Bulgaria’s Ministry of Justice is given to families who are open to adopting a child with special needs or who are interested in adopting a child over age 6. Sibling groups may also be available. Children are generally of Roma, Turkish, or European descent.

Please keep in mind that intercountry adoption is dynamic and unpredictable. As a pilot program, there are greater unknowns with the Bulgaria program than with other Bethany adoption programs. Unexpected changes in time frames, laws, and procedures are more likely when working in a new country. Families must be flexible, open-minded, and comfortable with uncertainty regarding their adoption process.

We encourage you to contact your nearest Bethany branch for more information. We look forward to helping you explore the possibility of adopting a child from Bulgaria! You may also call 1.877.64.ADOPT, or e-mail us at bcsinternational@bethany.org.
